It’s been 12 months…
…since I registered this free WordPress blog and 9 months since I posted my first blog entry [not that it was much of a post!] I still don’t plan on using this blog but I have to say that I am impressed by WordPress.com and its value added services.
Even though I’ve not touched my blog for months on end it’s still always been there when I’ve checked up on it. This reminds me of back in the day when other websites such as hotmail.com [before being swiped by Microsoft] offered free services and didn’t insist on users logging in every three months to keep their accounts active. I hope the WordPress team don’t introduce such limitations. At having just broken the 500 hundred thousand blogs mark I guess the service is still small manageable enough not to have to worry too much about introducing such measures.
Another thing that’s impressed me about the WordPress team is their apparent commitment to continual development. I don’t think the importance of this can be stressed enough. Having been around long enough to witness similar services and applications floundering after short periods of time I can really appreciate and know the value of their effort. Far too often have I seen potentially great products and services either go months on end without any word from the core development team or simply just disappear. Unless you’ve been involved in software development I think this is probably a value that can’t measured. My commendations go out to all involved, especially Matthew Mullenweg who shows a real passion for his craft [maybe too much passion as he's apparently too busy to design his own personal site these days!]
And one final thought about WordPress.com, I think they probably have their business model nailed, [which is good for us users] paying for customisation is logical. If you think about it, the free WordPress.com service is simply a try-before-you-buy experience [only not crudely advertised as such.] Any blogger who starts a WordPress.com blog and invests their time in it should eventually come to realise that paying for the freedom to customise [monetise] their blog is worth every penny cent.
P.S. I’ve actually surprised myself this morning as I quite enjoyed typing up this post, I didn’t plan on writing anything! Oops. Oh well, maybe I’ll make it an annual event.
Peace. Out.
